If there was a tornado in your area, it likely left behind a lot of damage. If you were lucky enough to avoid this damage, you can still help out with your neighbor if their home was hit by the tornado. Below are two things you can do that they will appreciate.

It is very important that you make sure the home is safe to go in before you start doing anything:

Water Damage

The first thing you need to do is to ask them to call their insurance company. They will send someone out to the home to look over the damage, and they will suggest a water restoration company for your neighbor to use. In most cases, they do not have to use the company the insurance company suggests, but they can choose one on their own.

The tornado likely may have damaged the piping in the home, which leads to flooding.  Even though there may be no electricity, you can still help by moving out furniture and other large items, such as the washers and dryers. Anything that touches the floor should be moved out. Ask the homeowner what personal items, such as photographs, they want to move out.

If there is mud on the floors, do your best to sweep it out using an industrial broom. Anything you can do will help the water restoration company do their job quicker. They will come in with large industrial fans to dry the carpeting, commercial steamer vacuums, and other equipment to suck the water up out of the floor.

Some of the things water can damage in a home include:

  • Drywall
  • Insulation in walls
  • Floorboards
  • Mold and mildew

Clean Up

Start moving large things like tree limbs, damaged appliances, and furniture to one certain area. This will make it much easier for the trash removal company to pick it up when it becomes time. You should check with the insurance company before you do this, however. In some cases, they will send someone to the property to do this cleanup for them. If going through the cabinets, open them one at a time carefully in case something falls out of them.

Keep a detailed list of everything that is damaged from the home. Your neighbor will need to give this to their insurance company. It is a good idea to make two copies just in case one is lost. Contact a company like Southwest Restoration Inc. with any questions or concerns you have.
